Mayme E. Dixon

Mayme E. Dixon married Roy P. Sweezey (transcribed record says "Tweezey) on 11/14/1912. According to the marriage registry (number 105), she was a widow at age 20. To me this means she married before but I can't find any records of Mayme E. Dixon. Can anyone help find her? She is a mystery. She was my husband's mysterious grandmother and we would like to know more about her. Thank you, Arden [name redacted for privacy]

    Her name on this marriage is likely her first married name, not her maiden name. You'll want to look for a marriage to a man with the surname Dixon. And look for births registered for children of Roy and Mayme - her maiden name may be listed there.

    @Arden360

    I suspected that the name of Mayme's parent/father on the marriage register was her maiden surname, perhaps with a phonetic spelling. So I looked for Mayme Hollins or Hallans.

    I found a 1923 birth 1932 baptism record for a child, Galen Millard Ford Swazey, with parents listed as Roy Percy Swazey and Mary Elizabeth Hollins Swazey.

    Mayme is a common nickname for Mary. Sweezey/Swazey are basically the same name.

    I also found a 1945 marriage for Marietta Swazey, daughter of Roy Swazey and Mary Hollins. Marietta was born about 1915.

    @Arden360 I took a look at Ancestry, both the tree and the 1911 Census, from there just a guess that Mayme's maiden name might be Hollins so I went back to FS and found Mary A Hollins GW39-9FK whose details match the 1901 Census for New Brunswick but I wouldn't consider that census to be enough but there are other Hollins relatives so maybe that might point you in another direction. Good Luck 😊

    In the 1911 census, in Limestone, Victoria, NB, I found Mary Dixon, born 1890, and husband, Murray, with their infant daughter Hazel.

    The child I mentioned above, Galen, was born in Maine in 1923. A January 1923 Maine newspaper article says simply "Mrs. Roy Swazey is confined to the house on account of illness."

    And in the 1920 census, in Penobscot, Maine, "Mame" and Roy Swasey, with 2 children, including the daughter I mentioned from the 1945 marriage.

    A 1909 Maine marriage of Frank M Dixon and Minnie Hollands seems to seal it.

    Minnie's parents are listed as Thomas Hollands and Alice.

    In the 1891 Census, Murray Dixon is enumerated as "F Murray Dixon."

    In the 1901, he is "Murry Dixon." Same parents are listed in the 1891 and 1901 as in the 1909 marriage record, James and Amelia.

    His burial on Findagrave is connected to the same parents as well.

    @Arden360

    I found a tiny newspaper snip to confirm that Mary Swazey is the same Mary Hollins GW39-9FK, from @maryellenstevensbarnes1 comment.

    I also found a 3rd marriage for Mary, in 1935, as well as another marriage for Roy Swazey in 1946.

    I've attached the sources I've found and merged several duplicates.
    Hope this helps!

    Wow- Thank you for all of this information.

    Galen was my husband's uncle. I had found his information and the 1920 Maine census with Roy P and Mame and Vaughn and his sister- Marietta Swazey married a William Berg. (the census taker sure butchered her name!)

    I didn't see your link to May's third marriage. I didn't even realize she was married again after she divorced Roy. If she married three times, no wonder I can't find anything about her death.

    The 1950 census for Greene County New York lists Roy as a widow. I know he married a Elaine Menhennett and that he died in Perth Andover in November 1980.

    It is crazy how much I have enjoyed looking up my husband's family! I only met his mother a few times and his maternal grandmother a few times. His father's family was certainly not tight knit

    I've found obituaries for two of Maie's sisters, from 1976 and 1987, and she is listed in both. Her 1987 residence is listed as Claysville, Pennsylvania.

    Could be. Celia died in January 1987, and sister Mae was listed as living in Claysville then.

    No siblings are mentioned in the 1994 obituary of her brother, Percy.
