Who were the parents of THOMAS GEORGE WEST, b.1838 in So.Carolina
Thomas G. West was my great-grandfather, who fought/survived the Civil War. I know that he grew up in Flat Rock, Buffalo Township, Kershaw County, South Carolina. Throughout various genealogy sites, his parentage has been misstated. Best evidence from various years' Census records, he was born in 1838. There were apparently many West families in that area, as there is even a WESTVILLE in Kershaw County. Thomas G. West's parents have mistakenly been attributed to be Wm. Eli and Millie Trusdale West. It APPEARS that the two families may have been mistakenly blended as Eli and Millie had 12 children, with two sons on genealogy records by the name of James, and two daughters named Nancy. In my search of Census records, their son Thomas never showed a middle name. Once I was able to trace him. He was born in 1837, and died in North Carolina in 1909 - 10 years after my Thomas GEORGE West died.

This definitely sounds like a puzzle! You may want to try looking at the FamilySearch Wiki for South Carolina. https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/South_Carolina,_United_States_Genealogy. It has helps for guided research and suggestions for research. There are links to a lot of sites that might be able to help you narrow down the parents for your Thomas G. West. You may also want to post your question in the "Southern States" group of the community. You may be able to find someone there who is familiar with South Carolina research or your ancestor. Best of luck.

Have you tried probate files? I've solved a fair share of my family mysteries with probate, even when the person didn't leave a will. And, most probate files on FamilySearch can now be accessed using Full-Text Search, making the dig much easier.1
