Photo matching

Is there a mechanism where I can submit a photo lacking information to see if there is a match already submitted by someone else, or a way to match faces? Here is an example, a photo I have scanned from my father's slides:

Often photo details can be found in details from family letters, journals or living extended-family members. I would share the photo with family members and ask questions - obituaries and newspaper clippings sometimes will have such photos also you might try Find-A-Grave

Hi @Valia Anne. This feature isn't on FamilySearch. Ancestry has Face Match which will take the uploaded photo and compare it to others, albeit, with varying levels of success. 20-30% success was reported on this recent video (The relevant section starts at 35:52): https://www.ancestry.com/c/discover/education/identifying-individuals-in-historic-photographs

Beyond that, @maryellenstevensbarnes1 is correct that reaching out to extended family is often the best for photographs, especially if the photo is less than 100 years old.

Thank you both for your answers. I have already reached out to all family members and either get no response, or no one knows. My little brother is the one in the background kicking the snow, but he doesn't remember this funeral either. I will try find-a-grave and Ancestry.

@Valia Anne let's analyze the photo: approx your brother's age in pic then ask yourself: what extended-family deaths may have occurred during that time period; state/city where your family lived - that leads you to obituaries of the last 50 years which you may find just by entering a deceased' name on google. Here's my wild guess w/o giving personal info in this public forum: the pic is from Nov-Feb 1950's-1980's possibly USA, Utah or Idaho — if you want to explore further, message me privately with the env icon Best wishes with your search

I clicked on the URL from @GFre —the video is pretty cool!

Thanks for your reply. My brothers and I had already limited it to a three-year window. And it was definitely in Utah. However, we ourselves never lived there—only going to Utah to visit relatives. I already went through familysearch looking for deaths within that window but I didn't seek out every possibility so I'll go back to that. I love the idea of putting names on Google to see if obituary evidence comes up — of course, none of these actually were the deceased. Facematching options seemed ideal, but I'll go back to the tried-and-true slog.

Well, whaddaya know? Before I did the deep dive, I tried Ancestry's Face Match with little hope for success. It made three matches — all relatives of mine! Just a little bit more research and the puzzle is solved. I'm embarrassed to say it was taken at my grandfather's funeral and were his nieces and nephews! They looked familiar to me, and my only excuse is that I hadn't seen them before and I was only twelve years old at the time. Thanks for all your help and ideas. Without you, I wouldn't have solved this.

@Valia Anne Good for you! I've been thinking about this and was about to call my sister who has a fantastic memory to see what she thought —- the picture makes me curious, since in the world-wide picture of things we're all related but the important thing is you found your family! Best wishes Mary
