Source associated with an person id is not available in events
I have an example of a situation that I have encountered multiple times. I have a source which displays in the “Sources” for a person ID. “Review Attachments” for the specified source shows the selected individual is associated to the specified source and indicates that the source is correctly linked.
Switching to Details, Family Members, the event (in this case a marriage event), and then opening the dialog for that event, shows no sources in the right panel linked for the event. There is no “Add Tag” button to add an additional source.
Example (screen shots are included below):
Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Brandt K883-7XB
has a source linked: 1856 Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Brandmann, "Germany, Marriages, 1558-1929" (Created by Family Search November 6, 2024)
Web Page: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JHNV-7HF
(This source is attached to this ID in Source Linker)
In Details > Family Members > Spouses and Children, there is a marriage event between:
Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Brandt & Sophie Louise Luecking:
19 MAR 1856 Evangelisch,Rahden,Westfalen,Prussia
Clicking on the Marriage produces a “Couple Relationship” for this marriage. In the right panel of the “Couple Relationship” dialog, the panel lists” “Sources (0)”.
There is no “Add Tag” button present. The only option is to “EDIT” the panel from the left panel.
Clicking “Edit” produces a larger “Couple Relationship” dialog which again lists “Sources (0)” with no option other than “CANCEL”. “SAVE” is disabled and “Add Tag” is not present.
I have tried adding a new event with the information for the actual associated source. Frequently this does not result in the new source showing in the list of “Sources” in the right panel. However, the duplicate source appears in the “Sources” tab.
This condition appears to me to be a defect in Family Search Family Tree because of these conditions:
- The source is linked to this person ID in Source Linker, and should therefore automatically be added as a source for the associated event
- The lack of an “Add tag” option would indicate an invalid state for this panel.
- The event is only associated with one individual.

Marriage records can only be attached to and displayed in the Couple Relationship.

I so wish they would fix this! Why does the couple relationship box not allow you to select the sources you've already added to the individual? (On some rare occasions they do spontaneously appear - why? - not always the relevant ones).
The only workaround I've found is to:
- find the relevant source in one of the party's Sources tab
- click on View
- click on Copy to Source Box (where it is irritatingly and unnecessarily called "Copy of…")
- Return to one of the party's Details tab
- click on the Edit Couple icon in the relevant Marriage
- click on Add New Source
- click on Attach From Source Box
- click on Attach next to the marriage source added in Step 3.
This is incredibly tedious and time consuming so I mostly don't bother. And neither does anyone else that I can see. Am I missing something???

The source must be added to the couple relationship. Often, you must copy the record to your Source Box and then add it and tag it.
I agree it is awkward, and I, too, hope, the format will be modified.

@rufusfrog asked "On some rare occasions they do spontaneously appear - why? - not always the relevant ones."
The source linker does add sources to the couple relationship when the conditions are right. The source linker is primarily focused on attaching sources to individuals and bringing associated conclusions (name, facts, events) to the person profile from the source. But in certain cases, the source linker will also affect a couple relationship. Here are the conditions:
- The source record must contain a couple relationship event. That is typically a Marriage event, but could be a Divorce event.
- In the source linker, you must move the event to the right. Note that this option is only available on the second individual presented in the source linker (if you enter the source linker for the husband, the event will be shown for the wife, or vice versa). You might see that there is already a very similar marriage event on the right side (already attached to the couple relationship) and so you might be tempted not to move the event to the right, since that will just create a duplicate event. Be aware that if you don't move it to the right, then the source will also not be attached to the couple relationship. In some cases, this will mean that you will need to go back into the couple relationship and tidy up the events, but that's the price you pay for getting the source attached to the couple relationship. It's a smaller price than the rigamarole of copying the record to the Source Box and manually tagging the event.

Thank you Alan! That's still quite convoluted but, as you say, far less so than copying to and from the source box. It could be made a lot simpler.
