Sexton records are administrative documents created and maintained by a sexton (the caretaker or manager of a cemetery). While gravestones provide a public summary of a person's life, sexton records often contain much more detailed information about the burial and the family behind it.
These records are particularly valuable for genealogists because they can provide information that never made it onto a headstone, or they can act as a substitute if a headstone has been damaged or lost over time.
Unlike a gravestone, which might only list dates, sexton records often include:
- Detailed Vital Stats: Full names, exact dates of birth and death, and occasionally the cause of death.
- Plot Ownership: Information on who purchased the burial plot. This is a major clue for finding relatives, as family members are often buried together in "family plots."
- Parental & Kinship Info: They frequently list the names of parents, spouses, and sometimes even the next of kin at the time of death.
- Unmarked Burials: They provide the only record for individuals who could not afford a headstone, including children who died young.
- Logistics: Details such as burial permits, the funeral home used, and records of disinterment or reinterment.
