Trying to suggest addition of a new PLACE

Seems easy, but hitting submit gives message- "Invalid parent place…."
The parent place I tried to add to is "Kumamoto-ken, Japan" and it is accepted as a standard place parent.

The location is a: city

at : 32.647778, 130.684167

and a source is-
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uki,_Kumamoto

What's up?

Thank you for sharing this problem! I am exploring the issue. I did notice that a description for "Uki, Kumamoto, Japan" already exists: https://www.familysearch.org/en/research/places/?focusedId=3452503 It is labelled/displayed as "Uki-shi" (shi means city in the same way that ken means prefecture).

@Richard Otter On the Wiki link you posted, "Kumamoto" doesn't have an ending suffix of "-ken". Could that be it?

No. The FS standard place does have the -ken suffix.

And I also tried it without the suffix.

    Thanks for the comment.

Strange. I tried this a got the same result:

I have seen other error messages in FamilySearch that are not exactly informative so there may be something going other than what is stated here. Also, it does not say that there is anything wrong with the parent place name but instead with the parent place type. Checking Kumamoto-ken's entry in the database it's type is Prefecture which is in the list of current parent place types as can be seen when filtering place search results:

so it doesn't make sense for the error message to say the place type is wrong. Someone from the Places Authority Team is going to have to take a look at this.

@Richard Otter When I search for your city, I receive this, I am not sure why there is a difference.

@sc woz What are you seeing as a difference? He is trying to submit the addition of the city of Uki as a child of Kumamoto-ken. Being a certified Prefecture, the routine should work just fine. But it isn't. That prefecture currently has 34 direct children so it certainly can be used as a parent place so the question is why is the routine rejecting it with the error "Invalid Parent Place Type."

There is a current place ID 3452503:

    Uki-shi
    Kumamoto-ken, Japan
    City, 2005 - Today

Will this meet your needs? As for the original issue, we are not sure of the cause, this has been forwarded to our management.
