@JCohen7 🌼 If you can share a bit more about the family—names, dates, locations, and the PID in FamilySearch—that will give the community a clearer picture and help them offer more useful suggestions for your research.

    Of course! 9VW1-CVZ

Mariah Melissa Smallwood, born March 22, 1844 in Coshocton County, Ohio, per her widows military pension papers for her husband. Her death certificate, informant was son, says father John Smallwood, and mother, Alvira Fulton. I have no other source for parents.

1850 census in housedhold of Alienda (Alcinda) Smallman (Smallwood) in Coshocton. Next door to Lamkin Lacy family. Lamkins wife, Matilda, was a Smallwood. In 1860 census, Alcinda, Mariah, etc, living with Lacy household in Auglaize, Moulton, Ohio. 1865, Mariah married Jacob Albert in Franklin County. Lamkin signed marriage affidavit that Mariah was of age to be married.

    Thank you so much!

Like many other states/cities, Ohio did not maintain a registration of vital records that early. https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Ohio_Vital_Records
You might be able to locate a baptism record, with a related date of birth, depending on the religion.

The Mid-West States Research group has some members knowledgeable in the region who may be able to assist.

Best of luck with the search.

    Hello @JCohen7,

Unfortunately, Ohio counties did not begin recording births and deaths until 1867.

Here is the link to what I believe is Mariah's death certificate from Clark County, Missouri: https://www.sos.mo.gov/images/archives/deathcerts/1929/1929_00037705.PDF

On the death certifcate her parents are listed as: John Smallwood and Alvera? Fulton.

Do you think the person named "Alienda" or "Alcinda" Smallwood, aged 30, in the 1850 federal census could be the same person as Alvera? Fulton listed as Mariah's mother on the death certificate?

Thanks to all who responded. Regarding the question about Alcinda Smallwood. I have wondered that myself, at one time. I haven’t found any definitive record of who she is. I do have a legal document from 1836, where she purchased a horse, saddle, and some furniture from Lamkin Lacy.

    Thanks again for your help.
