Understanding when you can add indexed information and when you cannot.

Hello. Can you please explain why you can "add" and "manage" new information on this record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSH1-J3GV-W?view=index&keywords=Samson&lang=en&groupId=M9M5-G3K

But the "Manage Index" tab is disabled on this record? https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSZH-WQR2-M?view=index&keywords=Joaqu%C3%ADn%20Pe%C3%B1aflor&lang=en&groupId=M9M5-WCP

Trying to understand the difference. Thank you.

Is this really a "Get Involved" question? It relates to viewing a historical record, and then being able to create an index using the "Manage Index" tab.

"Get Involved" generally is only for questions when a contributor is in the process of indexing or reviewing.

I apologize that I won’t be able to provide a simple answer to your question, but I will try to explain.

In general, when you see this it means either

    1) the page or the entire film was never indexed or

    2) Record and Person elements for that page have been deleted OR made inaccessible. This suggests that normal indexing and editing were previously permitted but are now disabled. Without delving into the causes, the bottom line is that this page is “broken”, but personas remaining on other pages allows “Manage Indexes” to remain open. In short, if even one persona remains on the index it can still be edited. For broken pages, engineers are still considering how to turn on indexing without risk of data loss.

The two examples you provided are a little different and more complicated. It appears that both of these films were never indexed. Searching by the film numbers yields 0 results and nothing suggests the records were ever batch-indexed as only the patron’s actions are seen in the change log.

In looking at the dates of the most recent permission changes they match the day the patron indexed these records. I can only guess that there was a short window that briefly enabled “Manage Index”. In any case, this is NOT the norm. To explain this to a patron, you could say, “The images on this film have no underlying index so they appear as “Image has not been indexed” and the Manage Index options are turned off. A few pages DO show a few names indexed and CAN be edited. On those images, an individual user created personas and an index now exists, activating Manage Index tools only on those pages. "

I'm sure I made that as clear as mud. Feel free to ask more questions if you need more understanding.

Thanks @SerraNola I started writing an explanation, but decided my wording wasn't sufficient. You did a much better job!

Thank you for much @SerraNola for this explanation. I pretty much get it. I am hoping the guest will as well.

Here is my issue. It’s only happening on one item number: #007915427, with this link:
    https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSH5-BSNZ-F?view=index&keywords=Samson%2CBataán&lang=en&groupId=M9M5-H7J

Before, I was able to manage indexes, and I could add people there, like Francisco Tayag. But when I click the next arrow, the “Manage Indexes” option is no longer clickable.

This happened after I disabled the new tagging feature because I was getting an error in the text box. After that, all the “Manage Indexes” options disappeared, unlike before when everything was working fine.

I go through the records where I see that I have a family member, and I check them one by one to look for more records of my ancestors. I use the “manage indexes” feature to tag them in the person records. But now I can’t do that anymore, so it’s become a bit difficult because I end up finding duplicates :) Thank you.

    @1992lanie

These names were all added to the index on March 7th: Francisco Tayog, Alfonso Samson, Rosalina Samson, Ignasio Samson, and Damasco Samson. Were there any others? Did you try to use "Manage Indexes" on any day other than March 7th? When you added these names, was the index blank?

Can you explain what you meant by "the new tagging feature" and how did you disable it?

Answering these questions will help me to help the engineers figure out what happened.
