@Aletha petronellaGrobler You can start by searching online obituaries, social media (Facebook/Linkedin) and people-search sites like Whitepages using their name and last known location. Simply googling their name and their last known location may also give a result.. You can also check the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) which is available on FamilySearch. The help center gives instructions for this. Another possibility might be checking with mutual acquaintances for information. Good luck with your search!

For the benefit of anyone with a similar question, may I ask that people with this or similar queries, tell us which jurisdiction the possibly alive person lives / lived in because the answer will vary across the globe. For instance, in England & Wales the full index to the latest death certificates is no longer online, newspaper reports of obituaries or funeral notices are patchy, etc etc. In other words, it is impossible to tell one way or the other unless you find some sort of a report by chance.

Absence of mention of a living person, does not mean that they are dead, and vice versa.
