I work for a museum that has the original plat that the town founder drew and annotated. Leadership is interested in hiring someone t to transcribe the faint cursive writing. Do people still perform this type of work?

Yes, they do. To find a reputable transcriber for historical documents, look for firms offering specialized historical transcription. A general web search should give you firms and individuals in your area. You can also contact local genealogical societies and see if they have any suggestions. You may want to make sure that you double check their specialties and are willing to undergo a "second-pass" review. Hope this helps, I'm sure that others have useful suggestions as well.

You might want to investigate http://www.fromthepage.com/

FromThePage is a crowdsourcing platform for archives and libraries where volunteers transcribe, index, and describe historic documents.
