    Did anyone notice a huge jump in Relatives this week, mine almost doubled. That is surprising, because it usually goes down after RootsTech, not up and certainly not by this amount. Any thoughts?

    @KylaOgleBayang

    I saw a slight increase in my relatives this week — but nowhere near the doubling that you report. I've used Relatives at RootsTech every year it has been available, and I don't recall the number of relatives ever going down — immediately after RootsTech, or at any other time. The only reason it would go down significantly is if a large number of people opted out of Relatives at RootsTech. In my experience, relatively few people opt out, whereas people continue to share links with their friends or on social media, so more people continue to join all the time. So the number of participants will tend to go up gradually until it ends (this year that is scheduled for April 30).

    I don't know if this would apply to you, but one factor that could increase (or decrease) the list of relatives significantly is if changes were made to your ancestors' relationships on Family Tree. Connecting to a new great-grandparent, for example, who happens to be connected to a lot of other people on Family Tree and thus to participants in Relatives at RootsTech, might increase the number of relatives quite a bit.

    It could also happen that one of your cousins shared a link in a particularly popular social media post that drew in a lot of new participants who happen to be related to you.

    Anyway, those are just some thoughts I had. I hope something I shared might be helpful.

    Thank you, Alan. I saw a 4,000+ jump from Saturday to Sunday and 14,000+ jump from Sunday to today. I really doubt that that many people are signing up for RootsTech now or that I am related to that many more than before, but I guess it could be accurate worldwide? My total right now is 77,149, and the total participants shows 511,912. That is 15%! Do you think? In years past, it has always started slowly dwindling down and ends up about 2,000 under the maximum amount during the event once it is about to shut down. At this rate, by the end of April, I will likely be related to almost everyone!

    Note that this really has very little to do with signing up for RootsTech. Although RootsTech promotes Relatives at RootsTech, there are many tens of thousands of R@RT participants who never signed up for RootsTech.

    Every user of the Family Tree app (and there are millions of them) sees a banner inviting them to join R@RT. There are many posts across social media inviting people to join R@RT. I'm sure some people are scared off by the name of the feature, mistakenly thinking that they need to sign up for RootsTech, but there are plenty who join R@RT anyway.

    @Nyx773
    I have 3 paternal, but over 34,000 maternal. If not for endogamy, I'd have over 50K. My maternal grandparents were 3rd cousins.

    I am at 49,731, nearing 50K or about 9.6% of 519,148, of which you are showing as one.

    Hi ÁIne, family search has us as 7th cousins ** 2x removed thru Elder. I am also distantly related to KylaOgleBayang 8th cousin * 1x removed (and about half or more of the identifiable people that I check from old photos posted on Facebook. Sometimes a person, their spouse and all four of their child's grandparents or other spouses of the person. ) I think I saw that I was related to 41 "famous people" on R@RT this morning, but then it dropped to 40???
