Tagged information imported with Source Linker don't link to the Source

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but when I add additional information with the "+" to a person in Source Linker it doesn't connect the source, so I have to go back and manually tag the source to the data field. For example when attaching census data to a person, I'll add the immigration year, naturalization year, residence, etc., NONE of that information brought in gets associated with the source that it came from. Its a huge waste of time and it decreases the quality of the data when the sources are not linked to the data.

@Darron Rempel I started a discussion about this sort of source linker bug about a month ago. The sources in that case were passenger lists. The source linker vowed and declared that it would tag the various pieces of information, but it often didn't. It is somewhat erratic; when I attach sources from a list to various members of a migrating family, some family members may get their new data tagged and others don't.

Are you seeing the same thing where the source linker claims it will tag something, but doesn't?

I too have had censuses, immigration, and draft cards randomly not attach data - sometimes data that was already indexed, sometimes data that I indexed.

But I also come across profiles where other users have attached those records, without completing the indexing, and the sources not linked to the Events. Those instances occurred between a few years ago and last week.

"A few years ago," most events didn't automatically link to sources. That's a relatively new feature.

@Darron Rempel If you’re still running into problems, it would really help to report them in the Source Linker Feedback group. The more details you can share about what’s happening, the better—screenshots are especially helpful! The engineers review these reports and can use them to track down the issue and get it fixed.

@MazyPutnam The discussion that I posted last month is in the Source Linker Feedback group. It's attracted a couple of dozen views but no response. Today, I flagged that discussion as as a bug report and to request a moderator review.

@JulianBrown38 In response to your request for a moderator review, I attached a record from this collection, and all non-vital events (immigration, emigration, and occupation) appropriately tagged to the source as designed. This issue may warrant further monitoring for additional reports.

@SerraNola I do not believe this to be a problem with a particular collection of sources. For me, it happens randomly. I can have one source from the same collection get tagged and another source not get tagged.

@Nyx773 Yes, I agree with you but I wanted to test a collection where we are certain that an error was produced. I was testing the process, not the collection.

    @SerraNola Ok, makes sense.
Should we report problem sources/collections to this thread as we come across them?

That seems to be best for now.

I've been trying to replicate this. Given its randomness, I figured it would take quite a few attachments to get an example, but I finally did. I tried various collections but then targeted the same collection as Julian. I found a record that was hinting to be attached - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DRCQ-G6V. I reviewed it and attached it adding the facts emigration, nationality, immigration and residence. Tags marked for name, sex and birth all show as attached sources to those facts. The others do not.

@JulianBrown38 Was your attach also from a Record Hint? Record hints can behave differently. Mapping (or matching field data) is not identical to attaching manually with Source Linker. Just a thought.

We have submitted a ticket to have engineering take a look at this. We'll get back to you when we hear something.

@Sam Sulser Thank you. The example I gave was almost certainly from a hint I found, either on a profile page or pedigree view. I am not related to Joseph Meneer, and I wasn't browsing the collection.

I have deferred responding to your question so I could spend some time looking at the records in this collection. I used the BROWSE ALL 296065 IMAGES button. From there, I could select a voyage, and (eventually) get to the image viewer in its "new" layout. That's the one where the indexed data is on the right side of the screen, and individual entries may have an icon that indicates that the source is already attached or a different icon that indicates that there is a potential match (i.e. a Record Hint exists). I looked through the images to see if I could find a source with an icon. (This would enable me to see if the potential profile's family did match the people on the passenger list.) I did find an example with a potential match - Herbert Marriot L1WL-1CF. I attached the source from the hint, not from the image viewer, and his new events were not tagged. Herbert's parents and siblings did not have icons in the viewer or record hints, so I went back to the viewer, and attached the father Josiah's source. Josiah's events were not tagged either. I haven't attached the other family members yet.

I imagine this is something like what you were doing, Sam.

After that, I have done the same sort of thing for several other families. In most cases, the events were not tagged. In one case, most of the family got events created which were all tagged. This was for the family of John Joseph Levy KZL2-P8H, who himself had already had the source attached in 2021 (with no tags, of course, 2021 being a while ago), but when I attached sources for his wife and daughters, the events were all tagged.

So, I am not really any the wiser!

Hey everyone! Engineering has reported this is fixed. I did a test and it worked correctly. Keep an eye out and let us know if you see this issue still happening. Sam 😊
