for James Bates LCRY-KLW, I found him on the 1861 census on ancestry (https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/8767/records/23451621?tid=&pid=&queryId=566f1779-eb9e-4a79-a909-257cacc66061&_phsrc=PMT2&_phstart=successSource) but when I try searching the 1861 census on FamilySearch using his name and birth city or residence, he doesn't show in the search results. I tried added his spouse's name and a child's name, but I can't get it to pull him up.

Any suggestions?

FamilySearch uses the 1861 census from the TNA/FMP, rather than from Ancestry.

Checking the 1861 census on FindMyPast, James Bate, Golborne, Leigh, Lancashire, England, is listed as age 25 (born in 1836 rather than 1826).
If I change the year of birth in the search, the record shows up:

It's often easier to find a record with less information, rather than more.

I had the opposite experience. I found the census record for a person in Family Search but could not find it in Ancestry. The reason was that the indexing of the handwritten surname was bizarrely wrong in Ancestry but was correct in Family Search. There was another household member with a different surname. I went back to Ancestry and found the record by searching for the other surname. I was then able to enter my person’s correct surname in Ancestry so that other users could find it.
