Labs: MyHeritage Matches

Here at RootsTech, trying out the new labs they just spoke of. First impression on MyHeritage Matches — the several that were found for my ancestor were all from linked further to: OldNewspapers, and required a further subscription to see.
This does fit with the new paradigm of linking information sources as opposed to hosting it all.

    I'm seeing a large percentage of hints from different countries. For example, my 2nd GGF was born in Ireland in 1828 and immigrated to the USA in 1855. The 6 MyHeritage hints are all from Scotland and Canada, between 1861 and 1891. No relevance.

    I guess my question/comment would be more as feedback for the project (if someone could post that over better please.) Feedback being that the linked 'Match' was more of a pointer to a third source vendor/location, as opposed to a link to an actual source image.

    Again, first look, first person I tried it out on.

    I imagine a dedicated group for Feedback will be created.

    I like the convenience of having information up front on what to expect from the MyHeritage sources. I like that it uses the FamilySearch source linker to attach the sources so that they can go to multiple people as appropriate.

    I would like to see some checking to see if the MyHeritage source is already attached. For example, if I attach the 1921 census from MH to all of a family, I don't then want to attach the same source again from MH when I see it as a hint in the labs feature for the next family member.

    This next suggestion applies to other sites as well. Would it be possible to have the system either add the date of the source when adding it to a person, or at least offering us the option to add it in the linking process? It's time consuming to have to go to the sources and add the date so they'll sort properly and make sense when tagged to places or events.

    I would like to see an option to not attach it to the person in FamilySearch if the source is already attached from FamilySearch or another site. As a FamilySearch Support missionary, I had a patron frustrated because there is not an option to not attach it. Thanks so much for this feature though. It is amazing.

    @Carol Lou Hill We are not forced to attach the hint. We can simply ignore it.

    She had clicked "not a match" and she still had the same number of matches. It looks like this has been fixed now!! She will be happy. It would be nice if somehow I could see a list of which ancestors have those MyHertigae matches without having to go to each ancestor!!

    @Sam Sulser
    Is there any plan to add a group for Feedback on the MyHeritage Labs project?

    I've noticed a few glitches, but there's really no place/way to report.
    Thanks.

    when I opened my grandfather's profile today I found a hint for matches from my heritage. One of them was to a new paper article about his marriage. When I tried to open it even with my paid subscription I found it was behind another paywall… Being at a Family Search Center I went to the My Heritage Library Edition and did a search using the the publication name and date of publication but was unable to access it. I felt it is rather pointless to add a source/story is I don't know what it is….. Other suggested articles had no reference to him in the text shown and since I couldn't access those to see if there was something else I ignored them.. I'm not sure how helpful this feature is or am I missing something?

    I've found enough good information that I consider the project worthwhile. I have had to wade through some not-so-good stuff to find it. That's why I asked about a Feedback group, as we normally have on most Labs projects.

    For example, I do a lot of New York City research for my paternal line. FamilySearch has microfilmed and indexed the BMD for NYC, but the images are restricted to FamilySearch Centers. MyHeritage has color images indexed from the NYC DORIS site. I'm delighted to be able to attach the color images to the families.

    I don't attach anything I can't review, such as some of the newspaper articles that can only be accessed with a higher subscription level.

    @Carol Lou Hill
    If the record presented is a valid match for the profile, we should not mark it as "not a match" as that sends the wrong signal to the hinting algorithms.

    Anna Kelly had 5 MH matches suggested.

    image.png

    All 5 belonged to her, and I attached 4 of them. One is her marriage record, which I have attached to her husband, from his hints. This is one of the glitches I've mentioned I've found - it's impossible to "rotate" a record hint from MH to attach to the correct person, as we can easily do with FamilySearch records or hints.

    So that one hint is still showing as pending for Anna. Everything else has cleared.

    Friends, we have been asked by those managing the My Heritage Lab to request that you please use the Feedback button on the lab page to report what you are seeing or experiencing. They would greatly appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. Here is the link back to the page:https://www.familysearch.org/en/access/myheritage/matches Thank you so much for testing the product and helping us to better serve you.

    I was disappointed to learn that this project is now in full release while the glitches/problems remain unsolved.
