Other Relationships - change relationship.jpg

Several times I have needed to change the relationship of a person in this section.

Could someone ask the engineers if it would be possible to "edit" the relationship and change it? For example, I accidentally chose "Enslavement" when I wanted "Employment". The only way at this time is to remove the person and reenter them with the correct relationship.

Thank you for your time.

@srfs This knowledge article should explain how to edit a relationship and make changes to the role.

I have read that article, but "changing the type of relationship (i.e. employment instead of enslavement)" is not a choice in editing another relationship.

When you edit an Other Relationship, you can do the following tasks:

    • Switch roles within the relationship.
    • Remove or replace the other person.
    • Add reason statements.
    • Edit and add events, sources, and notes.
    • View all changes made to this relationship.
    • Delete the relationship.

I imagine that the decision to not provide for a change in relationship type when editing an Other Relationship was deliberate. I have a couple of thoughts as to why that might be.

    • It would be necessary to decide which profile had which role in the new type. In the scenario that you described (Enslavement vs Employment), that might not be too difficult for the software to figure out. Other changes might be more problematic, either requiring an extra step during the editing or leaving the user to reverse the roles afterwards.
    • There are limits on the number of Other Relationships of any given type that can be applied to each profile. The limits differ between types (this help center article makes poignant reading in this regard). Changing the type of a relationship could potentially fail because of this.

I get the impression that Other Relationships are still work in progress (for example, I am pretty sure they still don't have an API for the 3rd parties such as RootsMagic to use).
