What are top next steps family search recommendations
After doing basic tree building and connecting based on family knowledge [add, edit, connect sources of name, dates, relatives, etc]
What are top bonus recommended next steps to family search?
My top 12 bonus recommendations, could think of off top of head in no order
Bonus recommend for each person check to see if birth date or death date vitals are just a year, see if a source is already connected with full date, like a findagrave, social security, draft, etc and update vitals with detailed dates, found when person was created from example census would have year, but exact dates could already be attached, but not updated in vitals dates
Bonus recommend for every married female, click each person, copy their birth name and surname of each husband, click other, click add alternative name, married name drop down, first name as birth name and last name as husband surname, save, repeat for each husband, often leads to more sources
Bonus recommend add alternative names for nicknames, changed names, local version of anglicized names, etc
Bonus recommend for every person, click each person, click each source, scroll to the bottom of each source to similar records section, click on each record not already attached and read very carefully to see if it applies to your person, and attach as needed
Bonus recommend for every person, click each person, click each source, for unfinished attachments to connect more family to lead to more sources, example a census can often have a grandparent, uncle, etc … even if click on view source of census might find extended family living next door on same census sheet
Bonus recommend for any spouse with a death date where other spouse does not, check to see if spouse with death date has a find a grave source and if spouses share a gravestone or are next to each other in graveyard, can also get recommended family member details others have already connected in find a grave system ... also useful to possibly find a spouse on deceased family with no spouse listed
Bonus recommend for each person check to any new record hints, read to confirm, and attach as needed of not just them … but find updating new record hints for spouse, children, parents, and siblings can lead to new record hints for person of current interest [example use tree mode to quickly see nearbly relatives issues, recommends, multiple parents, etc]
Advanced bonus recommend when search records family search is not showing any more great sources, on Historical Record Search Results list, click search, and delete birth place, click search then review records additional again, found extremely helpful to expand search especially when relatives come from cities that have changed country names over time …or expand years of birth range as found people who lied about ages over years for travel, draft, marriage, or just misentered, etc
Advanced bonus recommend seach full text has been extremely useful source for some of the stuck help needed, such as providing will details that can provide names and married names of children
Advanced bonus recommend using other sources like ancestry, newspaper archive, ellis island passenger search when applicable, etc ... often only focus within family search … then findagrave ... and then when really stuck expand out to other sources
Accept there can be 'typos' in documentation, everything can for sure be a relative with slight errors in documentation ... date could be documented a year off or a day off, middle initial could be documented wrong, name can be documents spelled wrong, someone could have accidently put a location of similar name like Paris, France instead of Paris, Texas
Note to self mostly ... can always be better at filling in reason information is correct … and best tricks can vary a lot by location and time of family members records
