Undefined in Surname Field

A new glitch has crept into the 1950 census. I've just noticed several instances of the word "undefined" in the surname field.

Both of these happen be "Garrity" records, but in different locations.

@Áine.ní.Donnghaile Hi! Are you asking why the "undefined" is listed alongside their names?

I am just making sure that is what you are wondering.

I visited your link and cannot see where the "undefined" is showing.

    Thank you for clarifying, :)

This error occurs when the UI expects a part of the name to be present but finds an empty field, resulting in “undefined” added to the name. Most all of our 1950 Census indexes show an empty field for “Name Suffix” and I can’t explain why only a few are tripped up by it, but it generally affects all on the page.

There is an easy user fix. 1) Open editing for Essential Information, 2) Click “Add More Information, 3) Delete “Name Suffix” and Update, 4) Save, 5) Refresh the page, then check Record Details to ensure that it no longer displays “undefined”. Fixing one entry resolves the error for all on the page.

@Áine.ní.Donnghaile You'll notice that Vincent P Garrity is fixed, but I left Edward P Garrity for you to try it out yourself. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6F3Q-3VQ1?lang=en

I'll let engineering know about this, but unless it's an easy fix it might not be addressed right away. However, I will point out that "undefined" gets transferred to the Tree by Source Linker.

Hi @SerraNola - Thanks, and yes, I realize it's a relatively easy user fix, but I felt I should bring it up since I saw quite a few today.

While you are finding them, see if you can confirm what I think is a common denominator. They all seem to have a "standardization" place name error. I think that's why there are so many in Middlesex County, MA. That county gets thrown all over the U.S. and England.

I stumbled upon one. The search results state Pittsford Vermont, but the record is for Pittsford, Michigan. As I've seen more often than not with the 1950 census, no "Place" name has been entered.

Where is "Open editing for Essential Information" located?

@SerraNola Thanks. I was trying to find it for the entire page/record and didn't realize it was for an individual. Then I re-read your original comment beyond step one and found at the end of the paragraph "Fixing one entry resolves the error for all on the page."
