Search using only an address
Is it possible to search using only a USA address to see who was living at particular address at a particular time? I have a letter written by my father in 1946. The I am fairly certain he was staying with a relative at the time but do now know who he was staying with. The only information I have is the return address. So I would like to search for that return address to see who was living there at the time of the 1940 Census.

The 1940 census is free to search on Ancestry.com, and the keyword field there will bring up a specific street, but not always the specific street number.
The keyword field on the 1940 census for FamilySearch does not seem to work that well for a specific address. If you know the city/town and street, that should narrow down the number of results you need to browse through.
You can also use the Steve Morse Census website to narrow your search to the Enumeration District for that address. https://www.stevemorse.org/census/unified.html?year=1940
To access the Keyword field in FamilySearch, start on the 1940 Census Search page https://www.familysearch.org/en/search/collection/2000219 and use the More Options tab to display the Keyword option.

If he may have resided in a larger city then Ancestry City Directories can sometimes be helpfu. You need to not only pick the city but also the timeframe and just like the 1940 census method use the street name as a keyword. Then it would be a matter of slogging thru the results to find the house number

Search by address in Newspapers.com. I do it all the time with success.
