In a previous discussion a few days ago you provided a translation of the marriage record of Fridrich Aeschlimann marriage to Barbara Gerig on 28 April 1682 in the Walkringen Parish. It indicated that he was given permission by the moral court in Bern to marry her. I assumed it was the moral court in the Walkringen Parish. I was able to find the minutes of that court and found an entry for Fridrich. Attached is a copy of the minutes. However, the date of the minutes for his case is 1 Oct 1682 which is about 5 months after the marriage. I looked at the minutes for all of 1680, 1681, and 1682 but could only find this one entry. If you could translate it for me, I would appreciate very much. Is it possible that "the moral court in Bern" would have been in the city of Bern", not Walkringen?

den 1. 8bris [1682] ist Fridenrich Äschliman weg[en] seines allzufrühen Beyschlafs censuriert und er gestrafft worden um 1 (Gulden?). Sein Frau aber um 10 (Pfennige?).

On October 1, 1682, Fridenrich Äschliman was censured and fined 10 guilders for having sexual intercourse too early, while his wife was fined 10 pfennigs.

There was a hierarchy: smaller offences (or cases with smaller consequences) were dealt with by the local Chorgericht, more severe offences by the Chorgericht in Bern. I am not too familiar with the rules in canton Bern, but assume that the permission to get married (after having had early intercourse, with the bride being pregnant) had to be dealt with in Bern. Early intercourse would also be fined - but this was dealt with after the marriage at the local Chorgericht. The couple got married April 28, 1682: do you know when the child was born?

I am also not really familiar with the coins in use in Bern at this time, especially not with the abbreviations: Gulden and Pfennige are just a guess!

BTW - where did you find of these Chorgericht minutes?

Thank you for that translation. The child was baptized in Walkringen on 4 Aug 1682, a little girl named Catharina. It sounds like Fridrich and his wife were probably punished in the Chorgericht's of both Bern (before the marriage) and Walkringen (after the birth of the child.)

I found the Chorgericht minutes in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I live about 20 minutes from the library. They are digitized but can only be viewed on one of their computers. Below is a picture of how they appear in their catalog. They have the minutes from many of the parishes including the city of Bern. When I get a chance I will check those minutes to see if they have an entry for Fridrich there.

OK - they have got the CD in SLC and you can access it via the local computer. These CDs can be bought from the regional genealogical society ( https://ghgb.ch/angebot-chorgerichtsmanuale.html ) - they are not cheap but reasonable, considering the effort of digitization. Looks like Bern (the city) has not yet been digitized - only the "Ehegerichts-Satzungen", i.e. their statutes.

Thanks for letting me know that Bern minutes have not been digitized. Saves me time looking. Guess I will never know about Friedrich being punished in Bern.

A few years ago a member of Geneal-Forum has published a few pages of the Bern Manuals: https://www.geneal-forum.com/phpbb/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=33100#p125089 (you have to be logged in to view the attachments - but registration is free and without any obligation). I have tried to contact him and asked, how he managed to get these images - I assume he paid the State Archive a visit and just photographed himself.
