Does FamilySearch have a procedure for deleting record sources from a person's profile?
I have four person profiles that have a mixture of source records that should be deleted. Two married couples have the same or similar names, but obvious differences such as birthdates, parents, etc. For the most part the source records are for children that belong with one couple, but were posted to the other couple. When I tried to delete the source record, an alert came up that I was unable to do this action. What procedure does FamilySearch have to correct these problems.

Can you post the PIDs of the relevant individuals please, and which sources you are to trying to detach from them? Then we can investigate the issue you are experiencing.

In general, if a source does not belong to a person, you will want to DETACH it from the person, not delete it entirely from FamilySearch (which you rarely have permission to do anyway).
When you are on the Sources tab for a person, you can click on the source title to reveal details and actions. One of those actions is DETACH.

You may want to review the change log of the profile. Often, when we see multiple incorrect sources attached to a profile, we will find evidence of an incorrect merge.

Dear Mandy, Alan and Aini………..Here it is three weeks later and I am finally replying to your responses. Thank you for quickly answering my question, "Does FamilySearch have a procedure for deleting record sources from a person's profile?" and thank you for offering me assistance! As soon as I saw the suggestion for "detaching," I realized I had done this before. Also, I was very fortunate to receive a message from a member who had created one of the profiles I questioned. The task at hand turned out to be more than simply detaching a source. The following is the message I sent to the FamilySearch members (who had posted to the profiles I was working with) to inform them that I had made changes. I limited it to members who had added sources in the past five years.
Dear FamilySearch Member _______________
Your name is stated in several profiles I have been working on lately. In the process of expanding the pedigree chart for my half-sister, who is a descendant of Mons Jensen ID# K6SZ-M6M, I realized there was a need for sorting out parents, children and spouses. This required detachments, mergings and some additions. I want you to be aware of what has changed and the following is a list the names and ID numbers for the foremost profiles I worked on. There were associated profiles affected, too; particularly for the children.
Because the following people (parents) were the primary names I was working with, I added to their title names the place/location they were most frequently associated with -- not always their birthplace, but where they lived in their adulthood. This helped to differentiate people having the same or similar names, and can even be found as part of their names in some documents. Also known as (AKA) are listed below.
Spouses:
Jens Nilsen av Rafsbotn ID # K67T-9J1 – AKA Jens Nielsen, Jens Nilssen, Jons Nilsen, Jens Nilsen Gammelheim, Jens Nielsen Gunnethesen, Jens Nielsen Rafsbatten
Maria Pedersdatter av Rafsbotn ID # K63N-LYZ – AKA Maria Persdatter, Marie Pedersdatter Elvestrand, Marie Pedersdatter
Jens Nilsen av Elvebakken ID # 2W9S-7DD – AKA – Jens Nielsen, Lars Nilsen
Marie Pedersdotter av Elvebakken ID # G4QB-7TX – AKA Marie Pedersdatter, Marie Pedersen, Marie Kummu Packkanen, Mari/Maren Pedersdtr, Maria Pedersdatter, Maria Pehrsdr, Maria Packanen, Maria Elizabeth Kokko, Maria Pedersdatter Evensbakken
Children:
Anna Jensdatter ID # K633-SBD – AKA Anna Jensdatter inf, Anne Jensdatter, Anna Jensen, Anna Hofseth f Jensdatter
I merged profiles for Anna Jensdatter and a Kristine Jensdatter as there was a profile for an Anna born in 1853 who appeared to have the same parents as a Kristine born in 1853, and they weren’t twins. The 1853 birthyear came from a census for Anna, but the birthyear was an error. Further research showed the parents were actually different, each daughter’s parents representing one of the sets above.
Kristine Jensdatter ID # K6WW-H17 – AKA Kristine Jensen, Christine Jensdatter, Kristine Simensen, Christine Simonsen and Kristine Simensen f Jensen
Kristine’s profile had two sets of parents (the ones listed above). Determination of which couple she belonged to was based on location of mother’s residence for the births of her children. Of note is that Kristine and her spouse Simon Simonsen ID # 2W99-FNF both have census reports with birthdates that do not match their birth records.
Kristine’s birthdates: May 1, 1853 and May 19, 1853 in Norway church records; June 24, 1852 in 1910 Census; June 18, 1853 in 1920 Census
Simon’s birthdates: April 26, 1835 in Norway church records; April 15, 1837 in 1910 Census; April 28, 1835 in 1920 Census
The Census records came from the Digital Arkivet, so they are not original. However, some of the records allow access to the original which has more information. The variance in birthdates may be due to the person 1) providing the information, 2) collecting the information, or 3) transcribing the information.
Mons Jensen ID # K6SZ-M6M – AKA Muns Jensen, Mons Jenson, Mons Sørensens
Mons has one Church of Norway baptism record with the last name of Sørensens. In checking the original record, Sørensens is the last name of an entry two spaces above Mons for an Anders Sørensen. In Mons’ entry only his first name is stated, but his parents and dates are correct.
The variety of names and spelling of names came from FamilySearch, and Ancestry.com for the most part; other websites were MyHeritage, GENI and Geneanet. Not all the names are associated with documents – they came from other family trees. Most helpful was the information I received from a FamilySearch member in response to my query about sources for information he had posted some years ago. He sent me links to Norwegian records and I created sources in the FamilySearch profiles for those links.
Also, to be noted, is that Jens Nilsen Elvebakken was the second husband of Marie Pedersdotter av Elvebakken. Her first husband was Nils Christensen Elvebakken ID # GGMX-BJ2 and he died the year before Marie married Jens Nilsen Elvebakken. Marie and Nils had seven children. I have only found one child born to Marie and Jens – daughter Kristine Jensdatter who is discussed above.
I hope my work is correct. If you have questions or don’t agree with the changes I’ve made, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your consideration. Best regards, Donna Pagenkopf Libal"
As I worked through these profiles, I left notes and discussions, too, so there is a thread for what evolved. If you feel I should have done something more in this situation, please let me know.
Again, thank you!…………Donna Pagenkopf Libal
