Ireland, Tipperary—Church Records, 1740–1880 [Part D] [MQVQ-NTM] Birth versus Baptism Records

I've looked at several batches like this where the ledger is labelled "Births" but the indexer put the date information in the Baptism date fields. In reviewing the instructions, I believe the date information should be in the Birth fields. Secondly, some ledgers are not labelled one way or the other and the indexer assumed? they were Baptism records and entered the information accordingly.

Can someone please clarify? I would like to help with more of the Ireland records but want to make sure I'm on the right track.

Church records - and these are Irish Roman Catholic Church records - are baptisms, not births. The early ones don't even include a date of birth, just the date of baptism. Generally, a child was baptized very soon after birth, but they are baptismal records, not records of births.

Of course, a child had to be born to be baptized, but they are baptismal records.

Great. Thanks for the clarification. I will disregard the ledgers labelled birth and use the baptism fields.
