US—City Directories, 1903–1935 [Part N] [MQR3-8ZD]

I’m continuing to work on these city directories. I understand that we aren’t indexing business directories. However, if there are multiple people with the same name (ie. Atkins, Geo W) but they have different addresses (even though we don’t include that detail) would they still each get indexed even though they’re printed identically?

Names in business listings are not indexed. They will have their own entry later in the directory.

You will index the first Geo W only. Addresses have never been a part of directory projects.

From Project Instructions/What To Remember About This Project:

Index each unique name. Some names may be duplicated. When names are exact duplicates, meaning that all required fields are the same, index only the first instance of the name listed. Skip the other exact duplicates and then index the next unique name. Unique names include names with different middle initials and different name spellings or where the other required fields are different.

Thank you! Another question I’m having is when a name is provided with a business are we to index that person?

    I started indexing US—City Directories, 1903–1935 [Part N]

[MQR9-7CT] and quite a ways in I discovered that I switched the surname and given name. I tried to correct it, but it won't let me. Now there is just the same name on all of the entries I did. How do I fix it so that I can continue?

Go to the first name in your batch.
Delete what is in that field
With surnames, once the field is blank, click outside of that field, then click back in that field.
Delete what is in the Given Name field.

Go back to the first field and on your toolbar, click this icon. Repeat the process for the second name field. This button is 6th from the right on the toolbar

This button will copy the text for the selected field (ie Surname) into the other entries in the image. Once you do this, you will have blanked all of the names, you can start over.

Note that this will blank out every entry, so you will have to start over from scratch. If you had Ballard for every surname (this happens with Smith and Jones…ask me how I know), you would repeat these steps, leaving the surname in.

Unless there is a suffix field, suffixes are not indexed. If you have John Smith, then John Smith, Jr., only the first John Smith is indexed.

Click on the trash can icon on your toolbar.

    FireShot Capture 022 - Indexing Tool — FamilySearch.org - www.familysearch.org.png

This box will come up. Select All blank entries and click Delete.

    FireShot Capture 023 - Indexing Tool — FamilySearch.org - www.familysearch.org.png

Once done, you will be left with the indexed entries and will be able to submit your batch.

In this batch (US—City Directories, 1903–1935 [Part N] [MQRZ-91V]) there are probable females and frequent names with (Bev) and (Pea) in parentheses after. I don't think these are names of spouses, but districts, as Salem, Massachusetts has districts of Peabody and Beverly and also on places named after … I am not including these as spouses, but an additional instruction in future batches would help others.

@nanlwar you are correct about Bev & Pea being abbreviations for neighborhoods. I think the key is for indexers to pay attention to the placement of the info in the directory page for example entry #4 in your batch for Keane, John R the spousal information in parentheses is (Margt G) and the neighborhood (Pea) is part of the info that we don't index
