Can a child take over an elderly parents Family Search account?

This is against the policy of FamilySearch.

The child should open his or her own account. They can easily gain access to any trees built up by their parents.

First they should add their parents to their own record. If they are still living, these records will be private to that account.

Next they add their grandparents. Assuming these are deceased, they can find them by ID number. Once these are added, they will have full access to any trees built up by their parents or others.

This short answer is No, on FamilySearch, you cannot directly "allow" your child to take over your account; once you pass away, your FamilySearch account becomes inactive and cannot be accessed by anyone else, including your children; it is recommended to create separate accounts for each family member and share information within the family tree as needed. 

Anyone over 13 can create a free account and connect their account by adding their parents and grandparents using the information from their parents account so that all previous research connects.
