I am wondering what date I should be using to either index or review for the Certificate of Arrival for the above. If there are three dates on it, there is a date of arrival then there is a file date which I believe all of the paperwork was filed or when the Certificate of Arrival was filed from the Dept. of Labor and then there is another date which I am not sure of where that date comes from. Sometimes there is even a fourth date which does not show up any document.

The instructions state " Multiple dates may be indicated on a document. When typing the naturalization date, use the most recent date that relates to the naturalization process." There are no examples of this to go by on which date you actually use.

Why wouldn't you use the Arrival date if one is provided or the earliest date? When you type in the Record date, it is the date the paperwork was filed and not when they arrived? I am just curious.

Thanks for your help.

When it comes to COA's, if there is one that has If Witness of Whereof, this Certificate of Arrival is issued, that date is used. If you do not have one that has that, you will index it by the latest date, as a COA is part of the Naturalization process.

    Example with If Witness Whereof

Example without In Witness Whereof. I flipped it so there's no neck stretching when trying to read the file date. The file date is 12/15/1920.
