How to override(?) a drop down menu?

Hello! I'm trying to index a birthplace and it won't let me type in an answer if it is not in the dropdown menu and will automatically delete it. Is there a way to override this? Apologies if this has an obvious answer. Thanks in advance.

If it does not accept the typed birthplace, there is no way to override it. I'm going to tag @Ashlee C. since this is a known issue with the Ghana Census. If it is the Ghana Census, this has been answered here:
