My father was born out of wedlock and his birth certificate doesn’t list his father. Any ideas on how I could locate my grandfather

There is a very similar example in my family. An "uncle in-law" was brought up believing his grandparents were his biological parents, but eventually discovered he was illegitimate and his "elder sister" was his real mother.

At his funeral, some years ago, the matter was discussed and other relatives confirmed that his mother never did reveal the name of his biological father. I guess it's quite possible she did not even know his identity herself, or he was not the result of a "loving relationship" and she wanted to put the matter of paternity behind her.

Unfortunately, I believe you are likely to remain in the same position yourself. Without any documentation and other relatives that might be able to shed light on the matter, it seems highly unlikely you will be able to discover his identity.

A DNA test might be the best chance of finding the father. That can be a long shot if no one in that family line has also taken the test but they are becoming much more common over time.

    Good luck!
