While searching in "catalog" film and image (1803967 4859928 ) says I need to view these

records at a Family Search center. I called and was told there wasn't any restrictions on

that file and I should see them on my computer! I have Microsoft Edge but did download

Chrome and still nothing.

It's definitely restricted to AL and FSC.
I'm at my AL this afternoon if there is something I can help you retrieve, @KarenRaspatello

It sounds like the staff at that FSC needs further training: they need to be shown that FS's website is non-transparent about permissions. What it says for someone logged in with an LDS account can be completely different from what it says (on a page with exactly the same URL) to someone logged in with a public account, and both account types can encounter completely different results from the same URL at an FSC or affiliate library versus at home. (I'm sure there are some pages with half a dozen possible outcomes, depending on location and account type — and half of those possible outcomes will fail to tell the user that the result is variable.)

In my experience, first line telephone support is not staff, but missionaries. Yes, further training would be great but those missions are (or used to be) quite short.

I did go to FSC and you are correct, their computers aloud me access to the files I was looking for.

Just would be easier at home .. thank you for your comments

I am sure training would help but surely the real answer is to improve the UI and thus save the time both of users and of the support team?

Indeed, FS needs to listen properly to the concerns of the community about UI matters in general, rather than relying on you regular posters here to solve the same problems again and again for people.

An end result of many of the obvious UI issues is bound to be suboptimal data in FSFT, either by commission or by omission. FS are keen to improve data quality, a good (and probably cost effective) start would be to make sure the UI enables it rather than obstructing it.

The messages about where/how to access used to be clearer. The explanation about restricted access included "log in with a church account" as one of the options. We receive less info now than previously.

I'm fortunate to have a great Affiliate Library just a few blocks away. I often retrieve records for others who don't have that option and/or don't understand the restrictions.
