Temple: Add relationship to name cards
Reformatted idea by a moderator:
- My problem is ... I don’t always remember how I’m related to someone I have printed a temple ordinance card for, and I have to write this on the card, often resulting in spending extra time going into FamilySearch to find the relationship.
- When I ... am going to the temple or I share a card with someone,
- I want to ... know how I’m related to the person I am representing or have the person I shared with understand how they or myself (if they aren’t a relative) are related.
- Because ... I want to feel a connection to them and have a more personal experience. If I’m sharing the card I want their experience to be personal too, especially if it is my grandkids.
Original Post:
Occasionally someone in the Temple would ask me how I am related to the name on the card. I would say, "I don't remember." I got to the point that after after I printed cards I would re-lookup the name and write on the card "great grandfather 3x removed" or some such.
One optional feature I would like for the cards is to be able to click a box to add my relationship to the name on the card. That would save me having to re-lookup the relationship and trying to squeeze it onto the card.

It would be nice to add our relationship to the temple ordinance cards. Right now I go thru and write it on the cards but it took me years to think of it. It makes the temple work so much more personal to know the relationship. I do this with sealing cards and the ordinance workers seem to like knowing your relationship to the people also.

It would be a great blessing for identifying my ancestors on printed Temple Ordinance Cards if the names of the parents were added to the card like they were when a card was printed for all of the ordinances except marriage sealings. PLEASE create a program that makes my request possible. I shall assume that other users of FamilySearch want this feature, too. THANK YOU .. SJCLARK

I agree, it would be a great to have the parents always print on the ordinance cards like they used to. It makes it so much easier to keep my families straight. I also think it is interesting/useful for youth who are doing family baptisms to see how the person they are doing the ordinance for fits into the family.

I agree. I hand write relationships one the cards as I print out several as a time. It's a nice reminder of the relationship when at the temple.
3 -
That is a nice idea. I would like the relationship shown in the "My Reservations" and "Shared" so that we can know the relationship when choosing which cards to print. From there it would be (I think) easy for the system to print the relationship in the cards.

It would be a great enhancement if when printing temple cards out, for it to print the relationship to the owner of the card. This would help those taking names to the temple to feel the connection to the name on the card. For example, if I was printing out a card for a 1st cousin 3 time removed, somewhere on the card could read 1x3, or 1st 3x. Or if it was a great great great aunt, it might read ggga. Or for a 3rd cousin once removed it could read 3x1 or 3rd 1x. I have had several people also mention this idea and would love to have this automatically printed on the card. I know for most that have reserved the name, their information prints on the card. And to have the relationship of the person who's work is being done be on the card somewhere, like I said would be a great enhancement to the temple experience and make the person come more alive for those who take the names to the temple.

If the relationship were to be added to the card, it should be as an Option for the card owner.

@Blair Henderson Thank you so much for your suggestion for an enhancement to the temple cards. Your idea has been forwarded to the proper Project Manager.

@Jane Cantrell Brookman Thank you! I appreciate it. I have had so many others wish they could do this on their cards. So many are left to look each one up and write it in some form if they want it on the card.
@Chas Howell I would agree and think it would be completely fine to at least have the option so if someone wanted it to be on their card they print, they could choose that option. So I would agree with you. It would just be nice to have that option.

Wouldn’t the relationship only be true for the person printing the card? If I print and give a card to my child to do, it has the wrong relationship to the child on it. Could be confusing. If it was an option to print it, that would work better. If we don’t keep the cards anymore what difference does it make?

@TeenaLoveland1, that's a good point, whose relationship should be given? If one person shares the card with the temple and another person gets that reservation from the temple and prints it. Would the relationship displayed, be of the person Reserving or of the person Printing? And yes the option to display the relationship on the card or not should be an option.

Sometimes when I have grandchildren doing baptisms I have written the relationship of the person on the card to the ones doing the baptism but this only works if you have all grandchildren and not nieces and nephews. If you the card provider want the record for you it would be a nice temporary option as we don’t get the cards back anymore. Also, for the one doing the research, providing the cards, having the relationship on it would show us wife of cousin whose family are in-laws and not related for sealing to parents after endowments are done. Therefore that person is unreserved for sealing to parent? By the way, is this correct? We don’t seal wife to her non relative parents? We leave her for the in-law family to finish? Is this totally confusing? Sorry.

It would be awesome if the printed temple card had more info. Rather than doing baptisms for names on paper, consider how valuable this would be for youth to do baptisms for a distant cousin, great aunt or uncle, or great-great grand parent; i.e. show the relationship on the card, preferably in graphic form as it is on the website. If there is photo, show that too! Granted, there is not that much space on the existing card. So, make the card 50% larger and print two per page. And, provide an option to print just one per page with even more info, which might include a brief timeline.

I totally agree with printing the relationship on the card for the person whose name is listed as the one who printed the card. I would also add that another option would be to print a photo of the person from a list of photos in the memory section if one exists. That way, not only would you know the relationship but have a picture of the person you are doing the work for and make it an even better temple experience.

I like the idea of having the relationship on the reservation list. I think I posted an idea years ago to put the relationship on the card itself. I understand that might not be practical, but it still sounds like a meaningful option to me. Maybe if it was possible to toggle on or off like some of the other stuff that can be printed on a temple card it would be okay? I do not know all the reasons why it might not be a good idea, but I just know that it could make people doing their own temple names feel closer to the person as it reminds them right on that card what their relationship is and could add to the spiritual nature of the experience. Now, I know I can figure it out and write it down somewhere myself, but again just an idea. Has anyone had the same idea? Has it been considered by engineers? Are there certain reasons why it was chosen not to do it?

It would be absolutely wonderful if the familysearch.org program had an option to print the relationship of the person on the temple ordinance card to the person who is reserving the ordinance on the back of the card. Just a miniature image of View My Relationship would be perfect.
Many people write this information on the front or back by hand. It is so good to know who you are doing the ordinance for at the time the ordinance is being performed.
This suggestion differs from past suggestions by printing the "View My Relationship" image. Visually, this works better for many people.

My husband added a similar idea yesterday (after searching but not finding this thread to see if it had been previously suggested). His suggestion though was to provide an option for printing the My Relationship image on the back of the temple ordinance cards. I think most people would find this to be a significant enhancement. I wouldn't need to be available for cards printed at the temple--just at home.

Really good suggestion! I’d like this too!

I would like to suggest that the relationship, if any, be printed on the family card; such as, The husband of my 1st cousin seven times removed.
The font would be very small but would give the patron a relationship for the ordinance to be completed.

My wife and I do about 40 Sealing-to-Parents and 10 Sealing Couples each week.
Sealers often ask - 'how are you related to this person' ... it is a lot of unproductive work to write relationships on the back of the cards - especially when our local Temples are not making receiving the Ordinance Cards once the work is completed an easy process and requiring us to print cards for each and every ordinance for each individual.
The relationship is an interesting factoid.
Since the address of the person has been surpressed from the printed card ... please consider printing the relationship somewhere - as real estate appears to be available.
1 -
That is very interesting.
I do a great number of sealing also and I've never been asked how I'm related to the people whose names I've brought with me. This is just my (humble) opinion, but to have such a conversation with the sealer uses valuable time and I'd rather be doing the ordinances than chit-chatting.
1 -
@Vince Fuller, could be condensed, I often abbreviate like, 1Cx7, GGF etc

@LAHS6, one man's chit-chat is another man's spiritual experience.

Since I am not the only one to suggest printing relationship on the family card, I would like to know if the original the January 19 from

@Vince Fuller thank you for asking. The suggestion has indeed been sent to the project manager. It is unknown at this time, if this suggestion will be implemented.

When doing the work of my ancestors, I always jot down the relationship to me. I prepare the ordinance card, print them out, trim the car from the stock, and then review my relationship with that relative. I manually write in pencil the relationship with the relative on the card. While performing the ordinances, I can think of them individually and not just as another deceased relative.
Since the relationship information is already in the system, that information could be automatically linked to me from my login data and printed on the ordinance card for me. It would be useful to all. Max Simmons

It should be easy to create a short version of the relationship such as:
Second Cousin Three x removed = 2C 3xR
wife of my Fourth Cousin Two x removed = W 4C 2xR
Second Great Grand Uncle = 2GGU
It would also be nice to and which of the four grandparents family lines the relative came from. Either the last name in the Grandparents family could be used or a designation as follows could be created.
My Mothers Mother = MMM
My Fathers Mother = MFM
these designations would draw attention as we are doing the temple ordinances to remind us that these are actual people were related to.

I also like to see the relationship and use some abbreviations to tell me who the person is. I write the ancestor I know on the card and then put the 1C2R next to the name.

Yes great idea.

suggest family search add relationship to family name cards.
I write the relationship on my grandkids cards when they do baptisms
