New Memories changes

Stories seems to have had some changes.

Tagged People only shows Public. What happened to all the Living Tags? I sure hope they are still there.

I can't seem to figure out how to edit Details?

Tag People is very slow.

Do we have to submit Stories for review now? It doesn't seem to be saving my changes.

I think that the different windows will cause more effort unfortunately.

The specific "changes" you mentioned actually work exactly the same way they have worked for many years. It has always been the case that you can only change the title, place, or date of a memory if you are the original contributor of that memory. It has also always been the case that you can add new tags to a memory but you can't change any tags that anyone else has added.

The particular interface for HOW you make these changes may have changed in ways that might seem "a little cumbersome," but WHAT you can change is still the same.

Somehow I got into a new version of memories this weekend. At least I think it is a new version. Things go well until I try and tag a second person in an obituary I added. The browser goes into a none function state and asks if I want to wait or kill it. If I wait 10-15 minutes I can tag the person, but it repeats the process the next tag. I usually use Chrome and have tried clearing the browser cookies several times and rebooting the pc. Also have tried in Firefox with same issues. Also tried on cell phone browser with same result. Not sure how I got into new version, but may have been to trying some of the functions in Labs.

    Here is version I see....

How can I switch back to old memories tagging version?

I think this is a new upgrade. I have reported this problem as well. I don't think there is any going back unfortunately but forward ho.

Update: I figured it out finally. There is now a 'Visibility' option to show deceased (Public) and living (?). Interesting.

@Tiffany Farnsworth Nash The Visibility option is for Public and Private (with an additional Limited Access option for Family Group Trees). That option applies to the overall visibility of the memory, and has nothing to do with deceased or living persons.

When you select people to tag to a memory, there is now an indicator to show if the person is public or private, or if the person is a shared living person in a Family Group Tree. That status is informational only, and helps to distinguish among copies of a person (since a person may be in your private space, and also have copies in one or more Family Group Trees).

The new tagging process seems hopeless. It is nearly impossible to tag people since you have changed the page. I'm attaching a screenshot of my page today.

I completely agree! This change (as of 8 March 2024) has become time intensive! The view is blocked by the instruction block and forming the box to highlight the names was about 3 minutes each. And the new "Tag People" box gets in the way as well. The drop down arrows on the right need to go away; the only improvement I see is that you can save the location and date by clicking save only one time.

Also, providing feedback about this took we about 30 minutes--I actually called to voice my concerns about how this is going to impact those that are new to familysearch. If I hadn't been doing this for 8 years, I just might have given up.

As far as I can tell, the changes to the Memories section only show if you have enabled Family Tree Groups Lab. See: https://community.familysearch.org/en/discussion/158774/was-there-a-discussion-group-for-the-memory-viewer-changes

If you are participating in Family Group Trees, some features of tagging are not yet available. https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/family-group-tree-pilot/article/family-group-trees-known-issues

The new format is a little cumbersome. It is not as intuitive as it used to be. When I was trying to add a title, the image on 2 different memories flipped sideways. The box that comes up when you go to tag someone is in the way , it took my quite awhile to figure out I could move the image behind it (because the box won't move) so I could get to the correct spot I needed to tag one individual.

Adding a title was so much easier in the old version.

I watched Rootstech and I'm a daily user of FamilySearch & the new format of Memories is taking much more time getting used to than it should. Unnecessary to change the order of DETAILS from title, date, place & description to title, place, date & description, causing us now to trip up on it & don't see the relevance of this change. Also I can no longer see all on one screen, opened tagged persons, all details & tags, now at the very bottom. I like to glance at this as one screen & a final check before exiting Memories & now have to click into 3 places- WHY???

WHY are we seeing no photo after it loads? All we see is this- (snip photo provided) & then it prompts us to tag it- REALLY? HOW? Is this being fixed?

The new way to tag/add titles, etc. is extremely difficult to work with. Am I the only one that is having this problem?

I'm all for improvements but I feel like the new Memories interface discourages adding details.

    1. The details are collapsed in the left column, so most people will never notice that they are there.
    2. The real estate that is visible to add information is collapsed and not expandable with your mouse, so it looks like you only have one line of text to write in.
    3. The old interface showed the details in the left column, encouraging input.
    4. Details entered on memories can help those viewing memories to have more context and understanding of a memory. This is particularly true of source documents that are not available as images on FamilySearch. I use many documents that either aren't available on FamilySearch or require a click or two to view them. Most users will never make the effort to view original documents, so I feel it's critical to make memories a place to store these and provide detail that "might" get read.

    Please adust this!

    Forgot to add...

    Slow performance.

Tagging people is slow. There's a long delay from the time you click until your computer displays the tag you're creating. Not sure why this is happening, but it's very noticeable.

I agree with Kimball! I have tried to tag some memories and have been so discouraged by the wait time and confusing steps necessary to tag multiple people in a given image/document. Why is this so much more difficult that the old version?!?!

I believe that the new version of Memories only shows if you are participating in the labs for Family Group Trees.

You may want to post your comments in that specific group.

Like @Áine Ní Donnghaile has stated, the new memory viewer is an experimental product that goes along with participating in the lab for Family Group Trees. You need to post in the group she tagged for your comments to be seen by those over the experimental viewer.

I don't do much with the Memories section anyway and haven't turned on any of the experiments, so I don't have any comments on the changes, but for the source document portion of number 4, I have a suggestion: get the best of two worlds by using a "Memory Source" attached from either a profile's Sources tab or your Source Box. This has the same date, title, citation, note, and reason fields as every other type of source, and you can attach the image from your Memories or from your device. Either way, the profile's Sources list will have a thumbnail of the image, along with whatever you write in the notes/description and other fields, and clicking the thumbnail will open the image in Memories in a new tab. This means that you can also use the Memories section's tools, such as "face"-tagging people's names, but even if you don't jump through those extra hoops, the source information will still be easily visible on the profile.

You can see several examples of what I mean at the beginning of the sources list on this profile: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/LTZB-C6N.

I already do this. I like having the citation and notes visible also when someone is viewing the memory by itself. So many people don’t read sources but sometimes look at memories. So I do both.

It is currently being utilized by those using Family Group Trees. That is how it gets turned on for your account - if you opt into the Family Group Trees. Everyone else doesn't have it.

Problems I am having with the new memories site are:

    1. It is much slower to tag individuals to the point that it is almost impossible and I have given up in some cases when it is a group photo.
    2. You can't toggle back to a persons page from memories. The only way it works is to click on memories first and then go back which adds extra steps and time.
    3. I am not seeing who contributes a memory which is helpful in contacting people researching same lines.
    4. Too much of the site is collapsed and you really have to look around to find what you are trying to accomplish. It should be more visible.
    5. Honestly the original site was much easier and faster to use. Wish you had not "upgraded" and hope someone is monitoring so changes can be made.

Hi I know that I have already posted this comment previously but after reading the comments in this thread I thought it would beneficial to repost it here as there people are having the same issues. I would also agree that tagging a person is now extremely cumbersome and frustrating.

    This is my original post:

Hi I was just wondering if anyone is having the problem of having certain memories not being visible since the update to Memories.

I have had certain memories that I uploaded with no issue 2 year ago are now no longer visible.

The memories are visible when you are on a Person's Profile and click on "Memories" for that person - all the memories are visible at this stage.

The issue arises when you then go to look at the memories individually. Certain memories are no longer visible and simply have a image icon placeholder. These images have not been moved from Albums and are visible in the Memory Gallery.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully this issue will be resolved.

I apologize in advance to other users, with the new tag memory feature I will not be tagging other relatives in the memory, it is too cumbersome and takes way too long, if it works at all. The page usually just freezes, not allowing me to do anything at all. It takes several minutes to resize the box, then another several minutes to add the name, then another several minutes to attach the name to the person.

Can we get the old (easy) tagging screen back for Memories????

The new one works very poorly, It pops up instructions that hide the faces, making them almost impossible to tag. And it is deathly slow. What used to take a couple of minutes can easily take 10 times as long.

And each time I visit a tagged photo it asks me to add a new tag for someone already tagged.

In my opinion, this new screen is badly broken, and not worth fixing, Please let the engineers know.

Please give us back the old tagging screen. It worked beautifully,

instructions prevent the operation they are requesting.jpg Infinite tagging requests for someone already tagged.jpg
