On a dormant family history website, I found this information: Demetrius Lee GENT , b 13 Jul 1843 , Epworth, Lincolnshire, England. Solicitors articled clerk, Farmer. d 1919  Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, England.

A note was added, saying " Demetrius was a Solicitors articled Clerk until the death of his wife Maria in 1880 and lived in High st Epworth, presumably he gave up work to care for his young family, and was  probably supported by his mother Jane Lee/brother John Augustus Lee, lived in church st in 1882/92 according to the Epworth directory and White's directory 1892, 1871 census lives  47 high st Epworth/annuitant? Buried 20/2/1919"

The information indicates that he fathered a child outside marriage with Annie Lockwood, b Abt 1877, West Ferry, Owston (Ferry), Lincolnshire, England. It names the child as Demetrius Lawrence Lee Lockwood b 1899, Upperthorpe, Westwoodside, Haxey, Lincolnshire, England, d 21 Dec 1975. That child was my maternal grandfather.

After leaving home to join the army in 1916, my grandfather was always known as Harry Lockwood, never Demetrius. In March, my brother and I will be visiting the French and Belgian battlefields where he served during WW1, so now is a good time for us to try to find out more about his early life and family circumstances.

If you are able to help please get in touch.

Lea

You do not mention whether you are aware of the profile for Demetrius Lee (ref. 9Z6Y-W7L) that has appeared on Family Tree since 2012. If you have not yet looked at this, I would suggest there is no better starting point. Sources relating to his birth, marriages, death, census and other events have already been attached. His parents' and grandparents' profiles have also been added.

If you require still further information on his life, the BNA website (at https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search/advanced) might well include newspaper references to other events where he is mentioned.

Incidentally, I was initially confused by your use of the title GENT (as in "Gentleman") - assuming this was his surname!

Thanks for your quick response Paul - I will do as you advise. I did try to search on the name but must have made a beginner's error in going about it.
