Re: South Africa—Dutch Reformed Church Registers, 1660–1970 [Part F][MQSS-3LJ]
Attention @gary_noble Please advise
I am indexing this record. The left page of the above batch (my batch) is unreadable but on the next page (the reference page) are both pages clear to index. See the photo hereunder. Shall I do a no, no extractable data on my batch and hope that the next page was indexed correctly?
Thanks Hester

If you are able to use the right side of your batch, then index it according to the Project Instructions. If not, mark it NNED. Reference images are there for your reference only as they belong to other batche(s) and will be indexed separately by others.

Thank you for your reply, I knew that much, thank you. I'll check the already indexed batches if it has gone through the system in another batch. Or maybe it will be my following batch to do 😊

@erutherford @The exception to not using reference images is found under General Indexing Guidelines at the bottom of each batch, under "What to do When Records Span Two Images or To View Additional Images". There are numbers 1-4 that show how to use the Reference Images when the Batch begins on your page but ends in a Reference Image. Then you would use a Split Image to complete the entire Batch. This has been my understanding for using Reference Images. It is not to be used if your batch image is of the right hand side of the image and started on a previous batch. This would be the case as shown in Hester's example above. Is my understanding incorrect? @Hester Korff Wolmarans

Hi Mary Rice
Thank you for your feedback. The reference photo on the right of my example is complete with both the left and right pages, and the one that I was working on was only the right page of the book (shown) and you know this. My understanding is, If the reference page was before (the left) of my batch and it shown only the child's birth and baptism dates, I would have indexed it as you've said from a split page, it was not carried over to my image.
As an example, I often get batches with the child's name, birth date, baptism date and the parent's names on the previous page, which is the reference page (left) of my batch. This is for example when their info was on only one page. Then I wouldn't index that one, because it would've been indexed by the person who indexed those pages. On my page only the witnesses were shown and that is not important info and can be left out be me, because that is not to be indexed.
In any case, I did a NNED on this batch, relevant to my query in case you wondered.
Hope this makes sense.
Hester

@Hester Korff Wolmarans Thanks for the reply. Yes, I haven't gotten too many that I had to use split images. They are not easy to do.
