Sex field

If there is no specifically listed sex, but later in the doc. there is a wife listed are we suppose to assume the sex is male and fill in the Sex field as such? The instructions only mention son and daughter, but there is no mention of wife. Thanks

Unless the document states my wife's name is (or similar verbage), you will leave the sex field blank. We do not assume anything when indexing.

We have been told we can determine the sex of the individuals using language in the text, based on the timing of documents. For example on the naturalization petitions, if someone has a wife or a husband then you can assume the primary's gender as being the opposite. IF we start to index more contemporary documents of the 21st century, then we will not be able to determine gender based on language in the text.
