Why there are so many "duplicates" in FS Family Tree?

Though truth is the duplicates are not as bad as they once were.
But its a topic to be aware of and know the history of how we got to where we are today

Always a problem, especially in merging the vast amount of duplicates "carried across" to Family Tree in 2012.
However, I find this nowhere near the problem as the one with individuals disappearing from the tree - largely due to careless users conflating them into one ID, just because they had the same name: but sometimes with no other similar characteristics than that!
I find my priority is directed towards undoing incorrect merges / restoring individuals, rather than to worry too much about the near impossible task of eliminating all the (true) duplicates.
So, the statement: "Though truth is the duplicates are not as bad as they once were!", might be true numerically, but careless merging has led to the disappearance of many thousands of real, separate individuals from Family Tree, so any statistics have to be viewed with care.

Fair Points . . . I don't disagree.
