Entry field asks for "former allegiance"

Michigan Naturalization Part A- So when the entry field asks for "former allegiance" can I use the term from the certificate that says "present nationality"? Image 3 Indicates birth was in Ireland so present nationality is written as "British". Is that the same as former allegiance or should I mark it blank? I see this with individuals born in Canada as well which makes sense.

Yes, the first example shows you that you index the present "country of which I am a citizen, subject, or national" in that field. So, former allegiance and present nationality must be the same in this situation.

But, we don't assume former allegiance from the birth country:

Type the former allegiance as it was written. The former allegiance may refer to a country or a specific world leader. Do not assume the former allegiance from the birth country.
