Bigger exports

At this moment an export of records (e.g. to ms-excel) is delimited to max. 100. My search results often exceed this maximum. Why is there a maximum anyway? Is it possible to either remove the maximum fully, or at least increase it to, let's say, 500. Thank you very much!
