There are conflicting directions on this project, regarding the Race category.

In one place, it says to classify Freedman or Freedwoman or Slave as Black. In the other, it ways that we should not assume those labels should be Black and to leave them blank.

Which is correct?

The PI and the Field Help state the following and the Field Help overrides everything else. I would index the race as Black until otherwise corrected by a mod and/or different instructions.

If an individual was recorded with terms such as "freedman," "freedwoman," or "formerly a slave," index the Color or Race field as Black.

I'm tagging @Maile L. The How to Index a Cohabitation or Marriage Registration Record, 1 example states the following: Note: Do not assume the color or race from terms such as "freedman" or "freedwoman."

The PI and Race Field Help states that "freedman", etc should be indexed as Black. We have another glitch in the Matrix?

I have put in a query about the inconsistency. Thanks for letting us know.
