    Cause of death will be on a death certificate. At least one state (North Dakota) redacts it and you will not see what the cause of death is. I don't know when the death occurred that you are asking about, but death certs began in the US around 1910 ish. Each state implemented on their own schedule. European countries implemented it earlier. Some states had death registers. Virginia has extremely detailed death registers starting in 1853, and ending in 1911 that included cause of death. (Documentation temporarily got very sketchy during the Civil War years, but quickly got back to normal in some counties as soon as cease fire in 1865.
