Two entries in the Name field

Possible bug. I noticed after adding a middle name to Harry Edgar Forbes (L2WL-WYS) I now see two lines of data in the Name frame, the newly edited name and the previous name. A page refresh did not clear this issue. Is it possible the reformatted page design has a bug? I have also noticed that on several occasions when opening an edit dialog the fields are not populated with current information.
Lastly, related to the new layout, I find it irritating that chronological Events are displayed using newspaper style columns. This method places a middle dated event beside the first dated event. It was more functional and logical when the order of the dates reflected the position within the frame and followed the natural scrolling action of up for an earlier date and down for a later date. I would suggest combining some displayed information othat spans the available frame would be a better layout. The KEY and source count line could also contain the modified date and person who made the change. The Event date and location could be combined. This would reduces the display by 2 lines plus 1 empty format line. The Reason header does not need to be on a separate line from the actual reason. Starting the users reason after the colon in many cases will eliminate another line. By doing this more information per screen could be displayed and in a more logical order.

No it not a bug. This feature was requested to consolidate Alternate Names into one location making them more visible/accessible. It appears this feature was just implemented this evening.
...chronological Events are displayed using newspaper style ...
If you change your preferred layout settings you can revert to a single column. Tools> My Layout Settings> Single Column.

Harry just shows one name:
Did you do something to his record after adding posting your report of seeing two names?

@Bruce and Laurie, like you, also bumped into the double name filed. I think this has quite a bit of promise for my German and Polish to America direct ancestors.
For my US ancestors and pay it forward assists, nicknames could be a great 2nd field name. I just await instructions and expectations on best/proper use. So often I've been moving "Nickname" out of vitals birth name field and add to alternate name fields, and now tagging sources to support.
I will be a user if I can get the visibility to the duo name edit field which I can't find as of today. any help with help articles or experienced users appreciated. Thank you Genthusiast for affirmation.
I had a watch list ancestor come in last evening where a presumably German FamilySearch user shared and edited names in one of my families (German birth spelling with America more commonly known English spelling, see sample screen shot green "step" numbers) and they had the two name field option and used them. The husband two name field though was lacking on my experience (I'm in US) when I attempted to explore (screen shot with blue step numbers).
The fact people from around the world share in "building out" family profiles/life stories is what keeps me coming back to the collaborative tree.
Thank you in advance to anyone with insight on when all users can expect access to this new feature. Thank you FamilySearch programmers for this added feature if that is the case.
apologies if this has all been discussed somewhere else...am a bit challenged at times...smile.

This is not a new feature. This is an unfortunate result of an automatic conversion of the Vitals name field that took place a while back when more language support was being added. Basically it is an error created when the conversion program could not handle certain situations.
During the conversion, if the routine found a name that was not in a template format it could handle, it created that x-Latn set of fields and put the name there, leaving the actual name fields blank. These should be corrected by copying the name under x-Latn to the upper blank boxes, setting the proper language template for the upper boxes, and deleting the x-Latn fields. You will notice in the menu for Language Template that x-Latn does not exist. It is not a real language template and I suspect that if it is left it could cause some problems in the future.

@Gordon Collett , thank you for your time to explain the history and especially how to fix if I run into more of these. in short...not a new feature, just a "bug" to be fixed manually.
It sounds like a programmer routine of some sort could do a auto sweep and make most or all of the corrections as I witnessed with the "Brief life history" clutter to "notes"...but maybe there are more complicated issues to consider?
again, appreciate your time to reply to OP and others who might have similar questions. Understandable and remember the days well when Ancestry.com also made a major platform change...similar bumps and frustrations by most as we ended up slogging through until kinks get worked out.
cheers!

UPDATE with workaround to fix bug for others who might run into a similar situation:
So like @Bruce and Laurie , was able to fix the two name entry bug display for my direct LL7C-TR8. But the path to correction took a bit of a turn from @Gordon Collett helpful advice.
My hurdle encountered when attempting to follow @Gordon Collett advice was that the "save" button to accomplish any edits was greyed out not allowing ANY changes at all.
after tinkering a bit....a workaround.
The only way to get down to 1 name was to:
First, trick the system in the top field of 2, by changing from "German" language to "English" temporarily so that the "Save" button became active for changes.
than
2. deleted the x Latn entry info after moving the Americanized nickname to alternate name field.
3. click save to confirm I was down to 1 name in the profile vital name field,
...than finally.
4.returned to vital name field and changed language back to "German".
all is good for now....knock on wood.

Apologies to the thread - I got this one wrong. I was remembering another recent Idea thread about consolidating Names. I'll have to put the reference if located - I thought the ideas was a good one (Gordon was involved if I recall correctly).

I still hope they do something to improve the name display at some point. But, unfortunately, this wasn't it.
