Help untangling a family
Hello, I have been trying to untangle a family - the wife of my 5th great granduncle. Her name is Mary Ann Ogden KLWJ-L5M. She has been merged many times - part of that is my fault (as I started working on family tree I wasn't sure how to merge correctly). She currently has 30 children listed! I will be more careful merging people going forward! Thank you very much.

You can certainly use any number of third-party genealogy software. You could also 'confess' to one of the submitters working on James Ogden. (I'm thinking the one that added the biographical sketch to distinguish between all the different James Ogdens.) I will help you this time though. This is quite intricate! Just give me some time. 😁

Ok, I think I've got it untangled. I've left Mary Ann Ogden KLWJ-L5M and a husband James Ogden with all the kids that were christened in Ashton-under-Lyne, but you will need to do more research to see if they are all their children. Ogden is a pretty common name in that area, and there are lots in that church. Try to look at the images of the christening records. They usually record the residence and the father's occupation. Those will help you to sort out the families. Just so you understand, you didn't cause that whole mess! I found some mistakes that had been brought in from the initial record import when Family Tree was first created that were wrong...a father christened in 1832 when his daughter is christened in 1836. Yeah, not pretty. Just know that there are LOTS of Ogden families in Lancashire. So good luck! and have fun!
