I'm indexing batch MQ7N-ZFP and have a question on determining the surname on the first entry.

This is a 1941 emigration record for Angelina Zuppardi.

She came to the US in 1911 under the name of ROCCO, Angelo (Angelina)

She was married to Dominic in 1924 (no surname in the document).

Do I index her given names as "Angelina Or Angelo" and her surname as "Rocco" (based on her name ROCCO, Angelo (Angelina) as when she entered the US?

and

Do I index her husband's surname as Zuppardi?

Since her name is now Angelina Zuppardi, but came to the country as Angelo Rocco, you will index it as follows:

    Given Name: Angelina Or Angelo.

    Surname: Rocco Zuppardi.

This is from the Surname Field Help: Maiden names should be typed in this field before the current or former surnames. A maiden name was often indicated by the words "née" or "born as." A maiden name may also have been written in parentheses.

    2nd part of the question:

You would not index the husband's surname as Zuppardi. That field would be left blank since we wouldn't make the assumption that Dominic's surname is Zuppardi. If the document read Dominic Zuppardi, then both names would be indexed.

This is surely beside the point, but it's quite likely "Angelo" is a bureaucratic error, and her real name was Angela.

Error or not, we index what we see. It's not our job to speculate on what a person's name may, or may not, be.
