@Jerry JPCaveman Here is how you can get to a specific year, state, county, for a given US Census:

    1. After you sign in to FamilySearch, click Search and then Records
    2. Below Find a Collection and the Collection Title search box, click Browse all published collections (not the only way to get there, but the way that I prefer).
    3. To the left of the list of record colletions, find the Filter by Collection Title search and enter a year and census. For instance: 1880 census
    4. In the collections, click United States Census, [year].
    5. Scroll down below the search boxes and the Search button and click Browser through [large number] images.
    6. Click a state.
    7. Click a county. You'll not usually be able to stop at the county level.

After you click the county, you will usually most likely need to click a city or township or some other division of the county and then you'll often need to choose an ED (enumueration district). This is done so you don't have so many images in each group to browse. If you want to search all the images for a given county, you'll need to pop back to the county and choose another town, etc. over and over. If you're doing that wide a search, you'll want to keep track of what you've looked at.

What she said 😊 here’s a link to the census records list. Choose the time period then as @N Tychonievich said select “browse all” then from there you can choose your state and county.

Thank you. This is exactly the answer to my question. I've wondered how for quite some time. It lets me view a census even if the name I'm looking for was misspelled and doesn't show when searching by name. Unfortunately the 1850 Illinois census isn't on here yet. Another user posted a pic of it so I know it does exist.

OK finally got it. My mistake was filtering by state (instead of entering the year) and it doesn't come up that way. This is a good example of why I wanted to search the census. The handwriting is hard to read and when it was transcribed "Wisemore" became "Bessmon". Now if I could get it corrected I'd be really happy.
