I looked through the North Carolina portion of the Wiki hoping to find information about Business Licensing Requirements and Records - to learn if they exist and if so where those collections might be found. I didn't find anything. I'm conducing a one-place-study of a little railroad town named Kerr, NC located in southern Sampson County, North Carolina that only existed from 1890-1953. It became a "town" when the railroad opened a depot there in January, 1890 and a post office opened later that year. It ceased to be a "town" when the railroad station ceased operation and then the post office closed in mid year 1953. Part of my research involves following the ownership progression [over that timeframe] of the 81 one-quarter acre lots in the town. As a part of that, I've found numerous businesses mentioned and want to follow up with research about them if it is possible. I thought that NC might have required business licenses but can't seem to find information about this.

I would suggest you contact the NC Archives. https://archives.ncdcr.gov/
