origin of name
edited February 21 in Family Tree
My husbands grandfather and uncle changed an Italian name in Italy of Conta to Canto when they came to the United States.
When I go into where the name originated from it always says things like Mexican, etc. Both men were born in Italy and parents were Conta back for ages and still is Conta in Italy. His family was proud of the Italian name and heritage. They just changed the name in the United States to make it easier for work.
I would like our grandchildren, great grandchildren etc. to know it is an Italian name not a mexican name or something else.
If you really care about the etymology of a name, don't try to use a genealogy site's generalist dictionary lookup. That's like shopping for groceries at the drugstore.0
