Confidential Deceased People

Hello, I've in the last few days come across a number of profiles on which I've recently contributed that are now coming up as "Confidential Person. Only you can see and edit this person in Family Tree. However, anyone could potentially see the photos, documents, and stories that are attached to this person. Learn more."

I see on https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/living-and-confidential-people-in-family-tree (Article Id: 16118), February 16, 2023, that:

"In Family Tree, data administrators occasionally set a deceased person's record to confidential. The record then becomes visible only to the user who added it. In Family Tree, you can identify a confidential person because a banner appears near the top of the person page. The Vitals section shows whether the person is deceased or living.

Administrators mark records as confidential if the ability for the public to view the information could harm the contributor. We do not accept user requests to mark records as confidential."

Has there been a recent standards change that is planning to follow an overall 150 year rule for all profiles per https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/are-the-confidential-people-in-my-family-tree-private-space-ever-made-public? Because I have several profiles of people to whom I'm related and have lived/died much more recently that do not seem affected. Yet I am not related to the profiles of the individuals on which I'm seeing this issue.

Thank you,

~ Mel

This issue has been discussed often in this forum. There are some Middle Eastern countries whose residents are marked automatically as deceased. The exact reason is subtle and religiously-related (I fear I'll get a crucial detail wrong and cause offense if I try to explain); hopefully a staff member or another user can recall accurately and precisely what it.
