Not sure that I want to do family history anymore! I am disabled and this 120 day expiration date was NOT inspired! What about those who live far away from a temple. Just frustrating! I know the goal is to get them through but at what cost. My nephew & his family go 2-3 a week but they are young with no health issues.

Ordinances that have 120 expirations are those that have been shared with the Temple and then taken by a distant relative to do often by the Ordinance Ready feature. All ordinances when you reserve them have a 2yr expiration, you can either share those with the Temple system and as such do not have an expiration. Please read the attached knowledge article that explains all about the different expiration times. Speak with your Ward Temple & Family History Consultant or your Bishop will be able also to give you a better understanding.

Please do not feel stressed about the change, it actually has given people who use the Ordinance Ready a little longer to complete these special ordiances. I hope this helps.

Now more than at any time in Church history, temple and family history work is a cooperative family adventure in which your entire family can work together, each of you doing what you do best.

You may be really good at researching and adding new names to Family Tree, your cousin may have all the old family photos and a scanner. Another cousin might be really good at writing biographical reports. Another cousin might have the resources to travel to world to archives whose records have never been filled and get photos of original records. Your nephew has the opportunity to go frequently to the temple.

Then in Family Tree you can add names and reserve them to your shared with temple list, your cousin can post photos, your other cousin can add original source documents, your other cousin can write beautiful narratives, your nephew and his family can use Ordinances Ready to take names from your shared with temple list and complete ordinances. And everything all of you do is right there in Family Tree where you can all see it.

Please rejoice in what you can do and please don't get stressed about what is not possible right now due to your circumstances. It sounds like there is no need for your to take, or feel guilty about not taking, any 120 day ordinances. They are all on the temple list and all of them will get done eventually. You should focus on adding relatives to Family Tree, reserving those ordinances, and sharing them with the temple so that your nephew's family, or your 6th cousin, will be given those names through Ordinances Ready.

Then on a day when you do have the opportunity to make that long trip to the temple, take a name back from your shared with temple list to complete or use Ordinances Ready to get a name.

The beauty and inspiration of the 120-day ordinances, is that if you find a name to share with the temple and your 4th cousin takes it as a 120-day reservation but doesn't make it to the temple then it reverts to the temple list and your 3rd cousin takes it and it that person does not make it to the temple and it reverts back, then your 5th cousin can take over the name, get to the temple and finally get that work done. This is much better than your 7th cousin reserving the name, forgetting about it, and having it sit on her reservation list for 40 years.

Please view Family History as a family project and let your nephew know about all the ordinance work you would like to get done so his family, or your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th cousins using Ordinances Ready, can get it done for you and then be content in knowing that you are fulfilling your current role as best as you are able.
