South Africa—Dutch Reformed Church Registers, 1660–1970 [Part D][M3F6-LVC]

On line 16 of this membership record is the name Elizabeth Louisa van den Heever. gel. Coetzee

Could "gel." be the Dutch abbreviation for maiden name?

Hi, I believe it is geb. short for geboren, which would indicate born as or maiden name.

So yes, you would be correct indexing Coetzee as the maiden name.

Hope this helps. Happy New Year🙂

Yes, that is correct - Coetzee would be the birth, and therefore the maiden, name 🤙
