standardized date issue

Lately when I am updated an index, I am getting errors with the dates. I can even select from the options they give me, and the error persists. Why it is that I cant just change 1753 to 1853 without having a date issue. The dates are even making me put periods after the number. 16.space April 1853 keeps autocorrecting. 16 Apr 1853 is standard isnt it? So why the period and then the error?
