I understand the cross + indicating a death date but do not understand what looks like an ampersand in the birth record. I would appreciate any clarification on this.

@Julianne Catheryne Harris, are you are talking about an Indexing project? Can you post the batch id or a screen shot to the Indexing Category at"

@Julianne Catheryne Harris, any chance of a link to one of the images with this character you can't interpret? Are the relevant registers written in Cyrillic or Roman letters? (In my experience, Greek Catholic records can go either way, depending on where exactly and when. If you're especially "lucky", the answer to the "or" question could turn out to be "yes".)

Thank you for responding. This is the link to the record - please see house #220 - 11 Nov. 1867; Michael Wengryn. In this record the ampersand looks like a 9 above his name.

As far as I can tell, it's just a flourish on one of the types of capital M that the clerk used. (See the two Marias on the preceding page. For the other type of M, see the Michael on the preceding page, or any of the mothers named Maria.) There is a similar flourish on the capital A of his mother's name.

    88. Born 11, baptized 12 November 1867.

    House 220.

    Child: Michaël, Catholic, male, legitimate.

    midwife Eudocia Sidorko.

Father: Georgius Wengryn, son of Basilius Wengryn and of Pelagia born Kuchar.

Mother: Anna daughter of Theodorus Kowal and of Maria born Jacuta.

Godparents: Hyacynthus Kieluch, Parascevia wife of Antonius Bunio, farmer.
