Computer RUN TIME
Why does Run Time (as shown in "Computer Information" not "reset" when shutting down the computer and restarting several days later, but it does reset when doing a "Restart"?
Long background for the question. Ran into an issue today with the Run Time as reported in the Computer Information. Elder Arnett was working a separate issue when he noted that the Run Time listed "days and hours" that were FAR in EXCESS of the actual run time. For example, one computer showed 11 days and several hours, another showed 9 days and several hours, etc, etc for 4 of our 6 computers. ALL computers had been shut down over the weekend and powered up yesterday when the Center opened; I can verify, because I was the one who performed the power on yesterday; I was also the one who shut down the computers at the close of the Center yesterday. Never-the-less, they all showed run times of multiple days. After Elder Arnett worked thru the initial computer and reset/reconfigured a software setting, he then went to the 2nd computer. However, it's configuration was appropriately set. (As a note, I had manually disconnected all but the 1st computer from power supplies while Elder Arnett reconfigured the 1st one.) Since this computer didn't require reconfiguration, Elder Arnett "Rebooted" the computer--and it reset the Run Time counter. I then "Rebooted" the remaining computers and they, too, reset the Run Time counter.

Check the bios version. IF you have an old bios version it will not properly set the hybrid sleep setting and prevents a full shut down of the cpu.

The most recent Tools update eliminated the "Run Time" part in Computer Info.

I'll call Tech Support tomorrow for assistance. I'm not technology-illiterate, but close! Don't think I would recognize bios if I were sitting next to it.

Sorry this is later, but I just found out that our computers do not reset upon shutting down. You must do a Restart, then the run time resets to zero days. I found this out after having to restart after an update. A restart takes longer, so I just do it once a week if there are no updates.

It's not true that you must do a restart, to reset the run time. When the computer is properly set to turn off it will reset the run time. The issue is that some computers are set to make a "Fast Start" and that is what causes them to not do a full turn-off. An FSC Support Tech can quickly turn off the Fast Start option that was improperly set by Dell on those computers.

Now we have shut down the old FSC Support Tools, and the Computer Information programs as they were not compatible with the Central support software. The New Tech update with the new Computer Check. We automatically set all computers to do a full shutdown when they are powered off and blocked the use of the Fast Start option. For this reason, we no longer post the computer run time as it is no longer needed.
The installation of the new replacement tools requires an FSC Support Technician to remove the old tools and install the replacement tools.
