I am doing tax records for US Mass 1822-1918 and under the given name column they have to DO. listed. What does this mean? Is it ditto referring to the given name above?

    I'm quite sure that's a ditto mark. You can put a screen shot of the batch you're working on so that we can be certain.

    Do is shorthand for ditto.

    Here's what to index:

    You will index the surname as Wilson or Willson and the first mention of Thomas.
